With so many patio materials available — porcelain, natural stone, concrete and more — how do you choose? We guide you through the key considerations.
How to Choose the Right Patio Material for Your Garden
Choosing a patio material is one of the most important garden decisions you'll make — it affects the look, feel and long-term cost of your outdoor space. Here's a guide to the most popular options.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain has become the UK's most popular patio material over the last decade, and for good reason. It's incredibly hard-wearing, frost-resistant, low maintenance and available in a huge range of colours and textures — including designs that replicate natural stone or wood grain.
Best for: Contemporary gardens, low-maintenance requirements, high-traffic areas.
Things to consider: Requires proper adhesive laying — not suitable for dry-laying on sand. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
Natural Stone
Indian sandstone, limestone, slate and granite all offer a beautiful, natural appearance that porcelain can't quite replicate. Each slab is unique, giving character and warmth that many homeowners love.
Best for: Traditional or cottage gardens, those who prefer a natural aesthetic.
Things to consider: Requires sealing and more maintenance than porcelain. Some stones can be slippery when wet.
Concrete Flags
Concrete paving slabs are the budget-friendly option. Modern concrete flags have improved significantly and come in a wide range of finishes. They're a solid choice for utility areas or larger spaces where budget is the primary concern.
Best for: Budget-conscious projects, large areas, utility spaces.
Things to consider: Less aesthetically refined than porcelain or stone. Can crack over time if sub-base isn't properly prepared.
Block Paving
Block paving isn't just for driveways — it works beautifully for patios and garden paths too, offering a traditional, characterful look with excellent durability.
Getting It Right
Whatever material you choose, the most important factor is the quality of the sub-base and laying method. A patio laid on a poorly prepared base will fail regardless of the material. At Tru-Pro, we always ensure a properly engineered base before any slabs are laid.
